Colors of Politics
People say that politics changes color
like a chameleon. In fact, politics is a circle of certain colors which remains
the same in terms of overall colors. It is understandable to talk of changing
colors within this circle, but the general approach to politics is the same.
However, the irony of the situation is that when a
political party is in opposition, its slogans and speeches suggest that there exist no one more benevolent to the people and loyal to the nation other than that
certain political party. When the same opposition party becomes the ruling
party, its behavior is not different from that of the previous ruling governments,
but even more, so it takes such steps on the basis of which it has made the
previous governments thieves, robbers, looters, traitors, and awarded them
innumerable serious allegations-based titles. As soon as the government comes
into power, the standards of the welfare of the nation and patriotism to the
state are completely reversed, the priorities are inverted, the other side of
the national interest is revealed, and the continuation of the previous approach
is seen in new manifestations.
Our grievance is that when our resources, compulsions, national interests, national needs, pre-determined scenario for the future, and anticipated strategies, all these conditions are crystal clear and the whole situation is well-known to all political parties, then instead of giving false slogans to the people, why don't all the political parties come up with a joint plan to create such an ideal system that really protects the national interests and ensures the solution of the people's problems?
People say that democracy is the best
revenge. But my question is what kind of revenge a democracy is, and from whom this
revenge is taken. The observation is that the common people
are the ones who suffer the most in a democratic system, and they are the ones who are the most affected
by its losses, especially the middle and poor classes of society. The benefits
of democracy are in place, but in practice, it does not solve the problems
completely.
If problems cannot be solved by the
present form of democracy, then why can't we try another system or another form
of democracy at least? Other systems have already been experienced throughout
the world such as monarchy, martial law, or the presidential system. Even in
these options, problems remain the same and many difficulties keep coming. So
today a sudden thought came to my mind which I am referring to as just an
ideological discussion without talking about its practical possibility. No other
sense or meaning of this discussion should be taken. What I am talking about is
a new kind of democracy that can be considered the renewal of the existing
democracy.
The idea is to keep the original
system of government within the realm of democracy but to change its style a
little and adopt an unconventional approach. According to this, a joint
national government should be formed in which the experts and professionals of
all political parties should be represented, because there may be talented and
experienced professionals of different fields in different political parties. For
example, it may be that some of the best economists be in one party,
constitutional and legal experts in another. The same is true of all sectors
such as education, health, infrastructure, administration, defense, etc. This
can be explained by the examples in the context of Pakistani politics that many
of us believe that Shah Mehmood Qureshi (PTI) in the Foreign Ministry is a
person with the best ability and experience, the most suitable politician for
the Interior Ministry is Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan (PML-N), Chaudhry Aitizaz
Ahsan (PPP) and Forough Naseem (MQM) may be the best choices for the Ministry
of Law, many people choose Ishaq Dar (PML-N) as Finance Minister and Khawaja
Saad Rafique (PML-N) for the Ministry of Railways. There are many more such
examples.
The point is that the highest minds of
all walks of life can be found scattered in different political parties. If
only for a short period, beyond all political differences and affiliations,
these brilliant minds could be brought together and the highest potential in
their respective fields could be utilized and their performance could be
reviewed impartially with justice and transparency. If they are held
accountable and reprimanded just for their performances, there can be no more
beneficial form of government in the interest of the country and the nation.
Therefore, a list of important
ministries should be compiled, such as the Ministry of Defense, Foreign
Affairs, Interior, Finance, Education, Health, etc. For these ministries, each
political party should give tickets to its most suitable representatives, and
each minister should be elected by direct voting from all over the country.
After such an election to key ministries, successful ministers, regardless of
their political affiliations, should render their services with utmost honesty
and sincerity. In the rest of the general constituencies, the members of the National
and Provincial Assemblies should be elected in the same way as it happens in a current
democratic election. In this way, the majority holding political parties should
form individual or coalition governments at the center and in the provinces as
per the constitution.
This is an unconventional approach to the governance system. Many in our country are advising the Taliban in Afghanistan to form
a comprehensive coalition government inclusive of all opposing factions as well, but they may not be
willing to act on their own. Apart from the practical difficulties of this new
approach, perhaps one of the major reasons is that its success depends entirely
on the performance of public representatives. Instead of blaming the other
parties, they have to give an account of their respective departments, thus
making the best use of national resources is the real test of performance.
Therefore, where so many experiments have been done, even if such an experiment
is tried, there seems to be no harm in it.
